Abstract

A condenação da Action Française por Pio XI teve repercussões em Portugal. O momento foi aproveitado pelo jornal católico Novidades para intensificar a luta contra os monárquicos que, contrariando as orientações dos altos dignitários da Igreja, insistiam em defender a restauração da Monarquia, não aceitando ser absorvidos pelo Centro Católico Português que desvalorizava a questão do regime político, dando prioridade à defesa dos direitos da Igreja Católica. Os monárquicos eram, assim, acusados de privilegiarem a acção política, obedecendo ao principio politique d'abord de Charles Maurras. A ofensiva visou especialmente o jornalista Fernando de Sousa, director do conceituado diário A Época. A sua resistência às orientações dos bispos foi colocada em paralelo com a rebeldia dos militantes da Action Française que recusavam ao Papa o direito de interferir nas suas opções políticas.

The condemnation of the Action Française by Pope Pius XI had repercussions in Portugal. The moment was seized by the Catholic newspaper Novidades to intensify the fight against monarchy supporters, who went against the orientations of the high dignitaries of the Church in their insistence on defending the restoration of the Monarchy. They rejected incorporation into the Portuguese Catholic Centre, which devalued the question of the political regime, giving priority instead to the defence of the rights of the Catholic Church. The monarchists were, hence, accused of prioritizing political action, following Charles Maurras's politique d'abord principle. The attack was especially aimed at the journalist Fernando de Sousa, director of the highly regarded daily newspaper A Época. His resistance to the bishops' orientations was compared to the rebellion of the Action Française militants who refused the Pope the right to interfere in their political options.
