Title: | Mazzini no pensamento dos utópicos portugueses | Other Titles: | Mazzini in the thought of the Portuguese utopians | Authors: | Ribeiro, Maria Manuela Tavares | Issue Date: | 2007 | Publisher: | Imprensa da Universidade de Coimbra | Abstract: | A revolução liberal, que ocorreu em Nápoles em 1820, provocou a reacção
contrarrevolucionária e o exílio de emigrados políticos. Alguns deles
refugiaram-se em Portugal. Alistaram-se na ala liberal, foram bem
acolhidos pelas Cortes portuguesas, organizaram a Carbonária.
republicanos do mundo". The liberal revolution, which took place in Naples in 1820, caused a counterrevolutionary reaction and the exile of political émigrés. Some of the latter took refuge in Portugal. They joined the so called liberal wing, were welcomed by the Portuguese Courts and launched the Carbonaria. They also heralded Mazzini's ideas and such programs as Giovine Italia and Giovine Europa, which were based on the following guiding principles: Nation, Democracy, Association, and Republic. The triumph of equality and fraternity, i.e., of democracy and the "Holy Alliance of Peoples", is the cry of hope from the Demoliberals, the Demorepublicans and the Portuguese Utopians in the mid 19th century. The nationalist and republican revolutions and the mythicization of revolutionary heroes, among them Giuseppe Mazzini, gave courage to the Portuguese Utopians who disseminated the ideals of the Social Republic, Democracy, Association, and Progress. This is the proper context for the reflections, the debates, the controversies and the literary production of the periodic press on the Iberian issue (the university way and the federalist way), the question of centralization / decentralization, the consummation of the Republic, of Association and Democracy. Mazzini, his doctrines and his revolutionary action were enthusiastically welcomed by some and feared by others. The truth is that his memory prevailed, either as an "Italian agitator", a "passionate patriot" or "one of the first Republicans in the world". |
