Portugal como enigma

Abstract

No ano do centenário do nascimento de Francisco da Cunha Leão (1907-1974), afigura-se oportuno recordar o modo como o ensaísta interpretou o carácter e a psicologia dos portugueses, chave do enigma que, para ele, era a independência portuguesa face a Castela e à restante Espanha e verificar em que medida os acontecimentos das últimas três décadas e o regresso de Portugal às suas fronteiras medievais afectaram ou não o perfil psicológico dos portugueses e os tornaram diferentes do que eram há meio século.

On the 100th anniversary of the death of Francisco Cunha Leão (1907- -1974) it seems appropriate to remember the way this essayist interpreted the character and soul of the Portuguese people, which he viewed as the key to the enigma of Portuguese independence from Castile and the rest of Spain. At the same time, it also seems appropriate to assess the extent to which the events of the last three decades as well as Portugal's return to its medieval borders have impacted on the psychological profile of the Portuguese people and made them different from what they were half a century ago.
