Construindo o "brasileiro": contornos do imigrante português no Brasil de 800

Abstract

Tomando por base a obra de Aluísio Azevedo, escritor brasileiro, o presente texto mostra como o imigrante português foi visto no Brasil da segunda metade do século XIX e como alguns de seus traços - como seu aspecto físico descuidado, sua excessiva economia, sua ignorância, sua melancolia (que se reflecte na música), sua sotumidade (que se transmite à sua habitação) - mudam quando o imigrante é bem sucedido, transformando- o no "brasileiro" que Camilo Castelo Branco tornou célebre, com suas roupas faustosas, assinatura de jornais, mesa farta e compra de títulos.

Based on the work of Aluísio Azevedo, a Brazilian writer, this article shows how the Portuguese immigrant was seen in Brazil during the second half of the 19th century. It also shows how some of his features -such as his unkempt appearance, niggardly habits, ignorance, melancholy (reflected in his music), his sullen disposition (reflected in his housing)- tended to change when the immigrant succeeded, turning him into the "Brazilian" character made famous by novelist Camilo Castelo Branco, with his ostentatious clothes, newspaper subscriptions, his abundant table and his purchase of bonds.
