Um olhar sobre a Lusitânia: Portugal visto de Espanha

Abstract

Espanha não é apenas o vizinho mais próximo de Portugal. É também um país com o qual a nação portuguesa partilha um espaço geográfico bem definido, a Península Ibérica, onde alternaram, ao longo dos séculos, períodos de unidade político-administrativa com outros em que predominou a diversidade. Particularmente nos últimos quinhentos anos, a existência autónoma do Estado Português tem constituído o último obstáculo à reunificação da Hispania romana. Como não poderia deixar de ser, esse factor tem condicionado fortemente a imagem de Portugal no Estado que resultou da fusão (sob a égide de Castela) dos restantes antigos reinos ibéricos medievais.

Spain is not only the closest neighbor to Portugal, it is also a country that shares a well defined geographic space with Portugal - the Iberian Peninsula, where throughout the centuries periods of political and administrative unity have alternated with periods marked by diversity. In the last 500 years especially, the autonomous existence of the Portuguese state has loomed as the last obstacle to the reunification of the Roman Hispania. As expected, this has strongly shaped the image of Portugal held in the state which resulted from the union (under the aegis of Castile) of the other medieval Iberian kingdoms.
