Bispos, imprensa, livro e censura no Portugal de Quinhentos

Abstract

Este estudo procura avaliar e perceber a relação do episcopado português de Quinhentos com a produção do livro impresso e com a actividade censoria que sobre ele recaiu. Explicitar-se-á como é que os bispos usaram a nova tecnologia para difundir o seu magistério e afirmar o seu poder de jurisdição, de modo a amplificar o impacto das normas, regulamentos, determinações e doutrinas que quiseram afirmar. Apurar-se-á que tipo de literatura produziram, patrocinaram ou lhes foi dedicada, esclarecendo os sentidos criados pelas redes de relações instigadas pela produção do livro impresso. Finalmente, procurar-se-á perceber qual o papel que os prelados diocesanos tiveram no âmbito da censura literária, campo onde tiveram que articular a sua actuação com o Tribunal do Santo Ofício a partir de 1536.

This study attempts to evaluate and understand the relationship between the Portuguese episcopate and the production and censorship of books in the 16th century. We will explain how the bishops used this new technology to spread their magisterium and assert their jurisdictional power, so as to increase the impact of those norms, regulations, determinations and doctrines that they wished to affirm. The work at hand intends to uncover the type of literature produced and sponsored by the bishops as well as the literature that was dedicated to them, so as to clarify the sense generated by the network of patronage relations that was stimulated by the production of the printed book. Finally, we will try to understand the role played by prelates in literary censorship, a field where their actions after 1536 had to be coordinated with those of the Inquisition.
