Um republicano heterodoxo: Fernão-Boto Machado

Abstract

Femão Boto-Machado (1865-1924) foi um dos mais destacados republicanos portugueses no período que antecedeu a mudança de regime, em 5 de Outubro de 1910, embora nunca tenha desempenhado cargos de direcção no PRP. Autodidacta e solicitador de profissão, o seu nome ficou associado à prestigiada publicação O Mundo Legal e Judiciário, que durante muitos anos foi uma referência no panorama judicial português. Tomou-se conhecido nos meios democráticos através de uma presença assídua na imprensa, mas também como conferencista acutilante, fustigando a Monarquia e a Igreja Católica. Sendo basicamente um republicano, com uma formação idêntica a tantos outros, herdeiros de um positivismo e de um cientismo, nem sempre assimilados com profundidade, Boto-Machado cultivou uma profunda preocupação pelas questões sociais, considerando-se um avançado nessa matéria, assumindo um certo anarquismo, pelo menos emocional. Livre-pensador convicto e maçon, organizou e participou no movimento e nos congressos de livre-pensamento, desempenhando cargos de grande responsabilidade no Grande Oriente Lusitano Unido. Proclamada a República, para além de ter sido deputado às Constituintes, onde apresentou um projecto de Constituição e outros projectos, alguns dos quais destinados a melhorar a situação dos trabalhadores, enveredou pela carreira diplomática, contribuindo, tanto na América do Sul como no Japão, para a afirmação e o prestígio do novo regime. Este artigo passa em revista a vida e obra desse republicano singular que foi Fernão Boto-Machado e que, em 1908, não hesitava em afirmar: "Eu, libertarista, - devo dizê-lo, - não confio absolutamente na República. Implantada e consolidada ela, o meu lugar será na extrema esquerda, talvez combatendo a República". Nunca combateu a República, mas procurou ser uma das suas consciências críticas.

Although he never held a position in the leadership of the PRP, Femão Boto-Machado (1865-1924) was one of the most prominent Portuguese republicans in the period that led to the regime change, on 5th October 1910. He was both a self-taught man and a solicitor by profession, and his name became associated with the prestigious O Mundo Legal e Judiciário ("The Legal and Judicial World"), which for many years was a journal of reference in the Portuguese legal scene. He became well known in democratic milieus thanks to his assiduous presence in the press and to his role as a scathing public speaker who frequently lashed at the Monarchy and the Catholic Church. At bottom a republican with the same background as so many other republicans, who were the inheritors of a somewhat shallow positivism and scientism, Boto-Machado cultivated a deep concern with social issues. He therefore viewed himself as being ahead of his time in that respect and took on an anarchist stance, at least at the emotional level. As a free-thinker and a mason, he organized and took part in the free-thinking movement and in its conferences, and he held important offices in the Grande Oriente Lusitano Unido ("United Lusitanian Grand Orient"). Once the Republic was proclaimed, not only did he become a member of the new constituent assembly - to which he submitted a proposal for a new Constitution, among other projects aimed at improving the working man's condition -, but he also embarked on a diplomatic career, strengthening the affirmation and prestige of the new regime in places as far away as South America and Japan. This article recapitulates the life and work of this unique republican who in 1908 did not hesitate to state that: "I, a libertarianist, must say it -1 do not entirely trust tire Republic. Once it is established and consolidated, my place shall be on the extreme left, perhaps fighting against the Republic." He never fought against the Republic, but strove to be one of its critical consciences.
