dc.description.abstract“Girls, Ladies and Sluts: Representations of Women in Portuguese Literature”: During the Salazar Regime and up to the 1974 Revolution, strict modesty was required of Portuguese women, both in their behavior and in the writing of literature. This essay takes the “scandalous” poetry of Maria Teresa Horta, Natália Correia and Adília Lopes as examples of the changes in the concepts of “modesty” and “scandal” in the writing by Portuguese women of the last few decades. The poems are read in terms of how they reflect their political and social contexts, but also as agents of transformation, particularly in sexual mores. While the gendered character of the literary canon is addressed, the article also argues for the impact of literary representations in the regulation and emancipation of (female) bodies.eng
