O significado simbólico da revista Atlantida

Abstract

It wasn’t accidentally that João de Barros and João do Rio gave the name Atlantida to the journal they had decided to publish. This publication’s aim was the strengthening of relations between Portugal and Brazil which they thought corresponded to common history, culture, and language as well as to possible advantages for both countries. Plato’s mythical Atlantida, supposedly situated on the Atlantic Ocean, between both continents, was the symbol of that “great and beautiful Lusitânia” they wanted to build. It was equally the expression of an ideal of happiness and wealth as well as the corresponding cultural and political field, which would be the outcome of the desired prosperity and well being.

Qualquer que tenha sido a sua origem, não foi por acaso que João de Barros e João do Rio deram o nome de Atlantida à revista que pretendiam publicar. Esta teria como objetivo contribuir para o estreitamento das relações entre Portugal e o Brasil, que eles entendiam corresponder a razões ditadas tanto pela história, a cultura e a língua comuns como também pela esperança das vantagens que daí iriam advir para os dois países. A mítica Atlantida platónica, supostamente situada no Atlântico, entre os dois continentes, simbolizava essa “grande e bela Lusitânia” que desejavam construir. Além disso era igualmente expressão do ideal de felicidade, de prosperidade e até de domínio cultural e político que lhe estava ligado, e que seria fruto da prosperidade e bem-estar desejadas.
