O ultramar e as relações externas nas declarações ministeriais da primeira república

Abstract

This study focuses the representations of the Overseas Provinces and external relations of Portugal included in the ministerial declarations of the First Republic. In addition to the intentions of the various executives regarding colonial policy, it addresses the framework of preferential relations with Britain and Brazil, but also with other countries, identified or not. The Great War provides the sixth category of analysis, with strong representation in these statements. Despite the desire of the new regime to deepen and broaden the range of its international relationships, such desideratum revealed to be complex and time consuming.

Este estudo incide nas representações do ultramar e das relações externas de Portugal exaradas nas declarações ministeriais da Primeira República. Além das intenções dos diversos executivos relativamente à política colonial, aborda-se o quadro das relações preferenciais com a Grã-Bretanha e com o Brasil, mas também com outros países, identificados ou não. A Grande Guerra constitui a sexta categoria de análise, aliás com forte representatividade nestas declarações. Pese embora o desejo do novo regime aprofundar e ampliar o leque dos seus relacionamentos internacionais, tal desiderato revelava-se complexo e moroso.
