O poder episcopal e a Misericórdia de Viseu (1516-1720)

Abstract

Between 1516 and 1720, the majority of the bishops of Viseu were also Principals of the Misericórdia. This was common practice in other cities, that is to say, bishops also assumed functions of responsibility in the confraternities. The fact that the Misericórdias were directed by bishops reveals that the relations of proximity between confraternities and episcopal power were effective. This study intends to observe how these relations occured in Viseu.

Entre 1516 e 1720, a esmagadora maioria dos antístites de Viseu foi provedor da Misericórdia de Viseu. Noutras cidades, sede de cátedra episcopal, os bispos assumiram igualmente funções de responsabilidade nas confrarias. O facto de as Misericórdias terem sido dirigidas por bispos revela que as relações de proximidade entre confrarias o poder episcopal eram efetivas. Com este estudo pretende-se entrever a forma como essas relações se materializaram em Viseu.
