O Mundo como jardim: o Viridarium do P. Francisco de Mendoça SJ, diversidade na unidade do saber

Abstract

This paper presents the posthumous work of a famous orator and professor at the Colégio das Artes, the Jesuit Francisco de Mendoça, who taught there in the beginning of the 17th century. Another teacher of that College, the Jesuit Francisco Machado, compiled and organized his writings within a volume which he named, using the metaphor of the garden, Viridarium Sacrae et Profanae eruditionis. Mirror of the knowledge and of the transmission of knowledge within the pedagogical context of the colleges ruled by the Society of Jesus at that time, this work provides relevant information for the study of education in the Jesuit school system, which was then extended to all Europe and to the new areas of European influence, as the new America and the ancient Asia. Far from giving an exhaustive reading of the information contained in that work, given its great richness (and the fact that it requires today a truly interdisciplinary reading), this paper is only focused on the aspects of the volume structure which relate to the conception of knowledge as unity, on one hand, and, on the other, on those that give us account of the circulation of knowledge and of the scientific progress in Europe precisely on a moment when that unity of knowledge was near to fragmentation and the first steps were given towards an autonomy of the scientific discourse.

Este texto apresenta a obra póstuma de um célebre orador e mestre do Colégio das Artes, o jesuíta Francisco de Mendoça, que aí ensinou no início do séc. XVII. Outro mestre do Colégio, o jesuíta Francisco Machado, compilou e organizou os escritos de Francisco Mendoça num volume a que, recorrendo à metáfora do jardim, deu o título de Viridarium Sacrae et Profanae Eruditionis. Espelho do conhecimento e da transmissão do saber no contexto da pedagogia dos colégios da Companhia de Jesus na sua época, esta obra oferece informações relevantes para o estudo do ensino na rede escolar jesuítica que então abrangia a Europa e os novos espaços de influência europeia, como a nova América e a velha Ásia. Longe de esgotar essas informações numa obra de grande riqueza e que requer do leitor de hoje uma leitura francamente interdisciplinar, este texto detém-se nos aspetos da estrutura do volume que se prendem com uma conceção do saber como unidade e naqueloutros que são reveladores da circulação dos saberes e dos avanços científicos na Europa, num momento em que essa unidade está à beira da fragmentação e se dão os primeiros passos na autonomização do discurso científico.
