The not so reliable Roman Empire’s judicial system seems having nurtured magical practices such as the legitimate vengeance executed by gods, according to literary and epigraphic sources. A selection, translation into Portuguese and analysis of 32 curse tablets (tabellae defixionum) from Roman Britain, a relevant source of Vulgar Latin, when compared to similar literary Latin texts, indicated that, apart from their different elocution, the elite and the non-elite converged in their speech demanding divine justice.eng
