Violência e universo rural no Império do Brasil: historia e historiografía

Abstract

A despeito de valiosos avanços, os pesquisadores ainda pouco conhecem as múltiplas dimensões dos movimentos sociais rurais no Brasil durante o século XIX. Raros foram os trabalhos sobre o tema que discutiram as formas como os pobres rurais tentam garantir sua posse da terra e quais foram os mecanismos utilizados para a ocupação em terras devolutas, consolidando uma cultura plebléia em termos Thompso- nianos. Se nós entendermos os movimentos sociais em toda a sua dinâmica, isto poderá ajudar-nos a recuperar a sua historicidade.

Despite the valuable advances, researchers still know very little about the multiple dimensions of rural social movements in Brazil during the Nineteenth Century. The few works about this theme seldom refer to the way the rural poor people tried to assure their approach to the land, what have been the strategies of occupation in vacant lands and how these strategies have helped to consolidate a plebeian culture, in Thompson’s terms. If we understand the social movements in their dynamic as a whole, it may help us to recover their historicity.
