A Igreja, o Estado e a questão da violência sobre os escravos: reflexões a partir do Bispado do Rio de Janeiro (1676-1785)

Abstract

Na época moderna, a exploração do continente americano recém-descoberto deu lugar a um desenvolvimento sem precedentes do tráfico de escravos, abrindo caminho ao debate sobre a legitimidade do próprio sistema. O artigo discute as posições assumidas pelo Estado e, principalmente, pela Igreja em relação aos maus tratos de que eram vítimas os escravos, vendo-os à luz da doutrina cristã, inscrita na matriz cultural dos seus senhores. Tomando como referência o Bispado do Rio de Janeiro, procuramos captar as linhas de força do pensamento católico e as medidas preconizadas pela Igreja no que se refere ao tratamento dos escravos.

Violence, under various forms, is inherent to the perpetuation of slaveiy-based regimes. In the modem ages, the exploitation by the Europeans of the recently discovered American continent led to an unprecedented development of the slave trade, paving the way for the debate on the legitimacy of the system itself. The article discusses the State’s and especially the Church’s positions towards the punishment of the slaves, viewed on the light of the Christian doctrine, which was part of their masters’ cultural heritage. Focusing on the Bishopric of Rio de Janeiro, we seek to capture the main lines of the Catholic thought and the measures suggested by the Church on how to deal with the slaves.
