Conflitos violentos entre a Coroa e a Mitra em Coimbra no século XIII

Abstract

D. Pedro Soares pertencia a uma família ilustre, provavelmente natural da região de Coimbra, ligada às dignidades do Cabido da Igreja-Mãe desta cidade. Eleito bispo em 1192, governou a diocese durante quarenta anos num período em que ocorriam na Europa e em Portugal transformações políticas e culturais significativas. D. Pedro Soares foi um estrénuo defensor das liberdades eclesiásticas e do património da vasta diocese que lhe fora confiada. Por isso, teve que lutar, não só com outros clérigos (seculares e regulares), mas também com a nobreza e, em particular, com o rei de Portugal. Os violentos conflitos e os infindáveis litígios que teve que enfrentar durante os quarenta anos do seu longo episcopado, o sem número de humilhações (às quais não faltou a prisão) com que a Coroa o esmagou, provocaram no bispo conimbricense inequívocos sinais de perturbação mental que o levará a renunciar ao seu múnus episcopal, em 1232, nas mãos do Santo Padre. Neste estudo procuraremos demonstrar, entre outras coisas, como o dilatado tempo de exercício de funções, particularmente se o seu titular está exposto a grande pressão, se revela contraproducente.

D. Pedro Soares belonged to an illustrious family, probably from the Region of Coimbra, which was linked to the dignities of the cathedral’s Chapter of that city. Elected bishop in 1192, he ruled the diocese for forty years in a period when, in Europe and Portugal, significant political and cultural changes were occurring. D. Pedro Soares was a brave defender of the ecclesiastic liberties and of the patrimony of the wide diocese he had been entrusted with. Therefore he had to fight, not only with other clergy (both secular and regular), but also with the nobility and, in particular, with the King of Portugal. The violent conflicts and the endless litigations that he had to face during the forty years of his long episcopacy and the countless humiliations (prison being one of them) with which the Crown crushed him caused in this bishop of Coimbra unmistakable signs of mental disturbance, which would lead him to renounce his episcopalian position to the hands of the Holy Father. In this study, we will try to show, among other things, how the lenghty exercise of functions, particularly if its holder is exposed to great pressure, can reveal itself counter-productive.
