As cidades romanas de Portugal: problemática histórica e arqueológica

Abstract

The ancient written sources addressing the Roman cities of the Portuguese territory are scarce. This drawback contributes to the pivotal role of archaeology, in different forms, to the study of Roman urbanization. Despite the advancement of the knowledge on the physical scenery of the cities, most notably in the end of the 20th century, many unresolved problems persist, often calling for a revision of prior assumptions. The study of cities and of the organization of its territories can only advance through the crossing of data sources, in a multi-disciplinary approach that highlights the unbreakable bond between ancient history and archaeology.

São relativamente reduzidas as fontes escritas antigas que aludem às cidades romanas do território português. Esta circunstância negativa contribui para que a arqueologia, nas suas diversas vertentes, tenha uma função essencial no estudo da urbanização romana. Embora o conhecimento do cenário físico das cidades tenha avançado de forma muito significativa a partir dos finais do século XX, os problemas não resolvidos são ainda muitos, obrigando a rever algumas situações geralmente admitidas. O estudo das cidades e da organização dos seus territórios só pode avançar cruzando todos os dados disponíveis, numa perspectiva interdisciplinar, realçando mais uma vez que história antiga e arqueologia são indissociáveis.
