Uma reflexão sobre a epigrafia clássica da Beira Interior com o auxílio dos SIG

Abstract

Starting from the numerous epigraphic findings of Beira Interior in many catalogues and publications and taking into account several studies on the roman settlement of this territory, we produced a specific approach to these important testimonies of Romanization through the Geographic Information Systems (GIS), a reflection crossing epigraphic sources, spatial archaeology methodologies and computational resources. With the conclusions drawn from the application of these computer tools to the problems of epigraphic practices in the region between Douro and Tejo rivers, we discuss some issues related to the dispersion of these epigraphic findings, their categorization by types, defining possible areas of cults and funeral rites, and promoting their articulation with the inhabited centers, the territorial units and the roads, for the characterization of local communities, according to their economic, cultural and ethnic characteristics.

Partindo dos vários achados epigráficos da Beira Interior, consultados em diversos catálogos e publicações, e tendo ainda em conta os abundantes estudos do povoamento romano deste território, produzimos uma abordagem específica a estes importantes testemunhos da romanização através dos Sistemas de Informação Geográfica (SIG), numa reflexão que cruza fontes epigráficas, metodologias de arqueologia espacial e recursos computacionais. Com as conclusões obtidas da aplicação destas ferramentas informáticas à problemática das práticas epigráficas na região entre os rios Douro e Tejo, discutem-se algumas questões relativas à dispersão destes achados epigráficos, à sua categorização por tipologias, definindo eventuais áreas de cultos e de ritos fúnebres, e promovendo a sua articulação com os núcleos habitados, as unidades territoriais e as vias de comunicação, com vista à caracterização das populações locais, segundo as suas particularidades económicas, culturais e étnicas.
