O Europeu e os seus penates

Abstract

Onde se sente o Europeu verdadeiramente em casa senão na sua formação intelectual, na sua língua materna e na sua confissão religiosa? É à luz desta tripla determinação que examinamos a imagem da “casa europeia”, ao mesmo tempo, como qualquer casa, inclusiva e exclusiva. Mas a esse sentimento de familiaridade e de pertença opõe-se cada vez mais a angústia de uma despossessão. As normas da cultura universitária e as condições da sua permanência estão ameaçadas, a liberdade de falar a sua língua nacional, em vez de uma “lingua franca” limitativa, vê-se reduzida ao espaço privado, o direito de atestar a inspiração cristã da Europa histórica e comunitária exerce-se com crescente reticência. Como não experimentaria o Europeu, identificando-se com estes valores contestados, os seus “penates”, o doloroso sentimento de ver a sua casa irremediavelmente hipotecada?

Where does the European really feel at home, if not in his academic culture, in his mother tongue, in his Christian tradition? Attending to these three dimensions, I will look at the European construction, which, as a house, is both inclusive and exclusive. But it happens that this very sense of homeliness is put in check today by the fear of having to lose it all. The intellectual norms and values of the University life are threatened, the liberty of speaking our own national language, instead of a constraining “lingua franca”, is reduced to the private space, the will to recall the Christian roots of the historical Europe and of the European Union is more and more controversial. No wonder that, under such circumstances, the European citizen should see his home as definitely mortgaged.
