Práticas da justiça eclesiástica em Pernambuco no século XVIII: o caso do vigário geral Dr. Manuel Garcia Velho do Amaral

Abstract

The main purpose of this article is to clarify a number of aspects of the bishopric of Pernambuco’s ecclesiastical justice and its operation in the eighteenth century. Its main focus is the life and carreer of Olinda’s vicar general, Manuel Garcia Velho do Amaral, whom had a long presence in the ecclesiastical justice. His trajectory as an ecclesiastical judge allows us to observe who were the main agents of that justice, with which means they acted on society, how interaction happened with other members of the ecclesiastical hierarchy, as well as the social profile of its agents.

O presente artigo visa esclarecer algumas facetas da atuação da justiça eclesiástica no bispado de Pernambuco no século XVIII. O seu foco principal é a vida e carreira do vigário geral de Olinda, Dr. Manuel Garcia Velho do Amaral, o qual teve longa atuação na justiça eclesiástica. O seu percurso como juiz eclesiástico possibilita observar quem eram os principais agentes dessa justiça, com que meios agiam sobre a sociedade, como se dava a interação com outros órgãos da hierarquia eclesiástica e qual o perfil social dos seus agentes.
