Do refúgio nos picos da ilha de São Tomé à absorção colonial: a questão dos angolares

Abstract

Descending from the survivors of the sinking of a slave ship (according to some) or from slaves fleeing the sugar mills (according to others), for centuries, the Angolares found refuge from the colonisers’ domination in the mountainous inland of São Tomé Island. This article analyses the problem of the origin of the Angolar people and describes the difficult process of its integration in the colonial society, which only began in the nineteenth century.

Descendendo dos sobreviventes do naufrágio de um navio negreiro (segundo uns) ou de escravos fugidos dos engenhos de açúcar (segundo outros), os angolares encontraram, durante séculos, no interior montanhoso da ilha de São Tomé, refúgio contra a dominação dos colonizadores. Neste artigo, discute-se o problema das origens do povo angolar e acompanha-se o difícil processo da sua integração na sociedade colonial, que só se inicia, aliás, no século XIX.
