Conflitualidade anti-senhorial na época moderna: o caso de Barbacena

Abstract

Este texto aborda um exemplo de conflitualidade senhorial na época moderna, ocorrido na vila de Barbacena, localizada na raia alentejana. As tensões sociais entre os donatários e os habitantes dos seus domínios, quase sempre originadas nos abusos de poder, nas violências e nas arbitrariedades praticados pelos donatários sobre os habitantes das terras sob a sua jurisdição, constituíram um fenómeno frequente. Iniciaram- -se ainda na idade média, prolongando-se até ao fim da época moderna. Este caso adquire alguma singularidade por ocorrer numa região do país onde os fenómenos sociais desta natureza parecem ter sido pouco frequentes e ainda por se ter arrastado durante vários séculos.

This text is a case study about a social conflict between landlords and theirs subjects, occurred at Barbacena, a little town situated in the border with Spain, at the Portuguese province of Alentejo. This kind of social tensions were then frequents. They began during de Middle Ages and extended at the end of modern age. Its origin was, generally, the power abuses, the violence and the arbitraries exercised by the landlords upon the populations who lived in the lands under their jurisdiction. However, this case is somewhat original because it happened in a country of Portugal where this kind of events were not usual, and extended during several centuries.
