As mulleres e a vellez: o seu papel socioeconómico na Galicia de fins do Antigo Réxime

Abstract

O presente artigo pretende ser unha breve reflexión sobre o papel socioeconómico das mulleres na Galicia de fins do Antigo Réxime, nun dos períodos máis complexos do seu ciclo vital: a vellez. A investigación céntrase en constatar como a idade era unha variable que condicionaba notablemente varios aspectos tanto da organización familiar como das actividades económicas desenroladas por cada individuo. Na Idade Moderna, tanto no mundo rural como nas cidades, as mulleres mantiveron unha secular participación activa na economía familiar, -fundamentalmente no ámbito doméstico, pero tamén fora del-, así como un importante papel socializador e educador no seo das súas comunidades.

This paper discusses the socioeconomic role of Galician women at the end of the Ancien Régime during one of the most complex periods of their lives, old age. It is found that the presence of elderly women in a family markedly constrained numerous aspects of its organization and of the economic activities of its members. In both town and country, women in general, throughout most of their lives, were active contributors to their family economy, both in the home and outside it, and played an important agglutinating and educational role in their communities.
