Since Aristophanes of Byzantium produced his edition of Pindar’s poems 2200 years ago, readers of the Theban poet have begun their study of his works with an enigmatic sentence whose interpretation has provoked much discussion since the age of Antiquity: ἄριστον μὲν ὕδωρ, “best is water”. In this paper I discuss the different interpretations that have been proposed since Antiquity in order to explain the sense in which Pindar claims that water is best. We intend to situate this affirmation within the context of the Pindar’s work and, in a more general way, within the context of archaic and classical Greek lyric poetry.eng
