Abstract

Although Seneca was not familiar with the ruins of Domus Aurea, his fascination with caves and springs as signs of divine presence, and the influence of the ekphrastic tradition of infernal regions determined the moralistic way in which he treated the underworld with its waters and strange animals in the Naturales Quaestiones.

Embora Séneca não tenha conhecido a Domus Aurea em ruínas, a verdade é que o seu fascínio por cavernas, grutas e fontes enquanto espaços indiciadores da presença da divindade, e a influência de toda uma tradição ecfrástica ligada ao mundo infernal, terão determinado o modo como, nas Naturales Quaestiones, tratou, com propósito moralista, o mundo subterrâneo com as suas águas e os animais.
