Xenophon’s narrative of the trial of the generals who fought at the battle of Arginousai has been commonly interpreted as a very depreciative picture of the Athenian demos under democratic regime, that would have acted tyranically by voting for their execution. My aim is to investigate the representation of anger (orge) as a collective political emotion and its effects on Xenophon’s narrative. Because the association between anger and punishment was commonplace in Athens and openly stimulated, and because anger, in this episode, results in a constructed desire to punish that leads to remorse (metameleia), I suggest it actually builds a less negative characterization of the demos.eng
