The composition of the scene of the third and last dialogue of Cicero’s De finibus, wherein the discussion revolves around Antiochus’s theories, is of great importance in the construction of a broader meaning to the whole work and of the atmosphere of aporia in which the treatise ends. In this dialogue, which is set in Plato’s Academy, Cicero, portrayed as a young student, argues against Antiochus’s theories, from whom he was then a pupil; the scene seems to suggest the necessity of traditional Socratic methods of investigation over the dogmatic stance of the Vetus Academia of Anthiochus.eng
