A dieta dos montanheses do norte da Ibéria sob o olhar de Estrabão

Abstract

The third of seventeen books in Strabo’s Geography describes the Iberian Peninsula from the viewpoint of a Greek citizen living in Rome in the period corresponding to the rules of Augustus and Tiberius. Amidst the multitude of information provided by Strabo to describe in particular the westernmost area of Iberia, reference is made to the natural resources of the region and the manners in which the local inhabitants used them, as well as prevalent rituals and the diet consumed by the “mountain people”. Such detailed information helps characterise the identity of “these others” living in the westernmost part of the known world, who in the author’s opinion, drew much benefit from the peaceful occupation and civilizing influence of the Romans. The present writing intends to analyse in further detail the diet consumed by the mountain people of northern Iberia as part of a lifestyle aimed not only at fulfilling one’s biological needs of survival but also at establishing social norms of conviviality that increase one’s sense of pleasure.

Entre os dezassete volumes que constituem a Geografia de Estrabão, o tomo terceiro descreve a Ibéria sob o olhar de um Grego que esteve em Roma entre os reinados de Augusto e de Tibério. Nas múltiplas informações que concentra na apresentação do confim peninsular, o geógrafo de Amásia refere seja recursos naturais da região, seja o comportamento de diversos povos face aos bens concedidos pela terra, seja ainda práticas rituais e de alimentação características dos “montanheses”, definidoras da identidade desses “outros” situados no extremo ocidental do mundo conhecido, que muito poderiam beneficiar com a intervenção pacificadora e civilizadora romana, na perspetiva estraboniana. O presente contributo propõe-se analisar a descrição da dieta dos montanheses do norte da Ibéria, uma dieta expressiva de um padrão próprio de vida que pressupõe não apenas a satisfação das necessidades biológicas de sobrevivência, mas também ocasiões de convívio geradoras de prazer.
