Abstract: The authors intention is to clarify the aims and purposes of the German baroque sermons, based on the texts of the «Viennese» Abraham a Sancta Clara. Some approximations to the sermons of the Portuguese Padre Antonio Vieira are equally pointed out. The present study aims to point out: the principle of the «theatrical sermon» which has the pulpit as a stage and the orator himself as the principal actor; the value of the exempla (taken from the sacred and the profane sphere) in order to moralize the life and the habits of the congregation. The chosen texts of Abraham a Santa Clara, in which the sacred and the profane have their specific place, are taken from his sermon book «Judas. Der Erz = Schelm» (1686) and presented in Portuguese translation.
