Abstract: The 1755 Earthquake still holds an important place in Portuguese eolective memory. In the significant mass of Portuguese works published from 1755 to 1803 the event emerges as a moment of tightening of popular piety and mentality. The systhematic study of themes and messages of that huge literary material and iconography, enables us to isolate and verify the significance of the different pictures and discourses around which the event is organized. The acquired data points out to the vitality of one of the most wealthy sanctuaries of meridional baroque sensibility, at the exact time when the city of Lights, Pombal’s Lisbon, is taking shape.
