Abstract: A Lisbon Inquisition summation of 1796 to Brazilian clerical commissaries to investigate a pharmacist and others in Rio de Janeiro accused of libertine propositions which ridicule religion is shown to be linked to the same repressive effort as that of the 1794 official enquiry of the city’s Literary Society ordered by viceroy Resende. The text of the various propositions as well as the final report of the investigating commissary provide examples of the structure of anti-religious remarks and readings at a time of fear of the philosophical and revolutionary mentality ascribed to France.
