The Sacred (v.g. religion) and the Profane (v.g. politics) are indissoluble aspects in Portuguese liberal society. Using a few specific examples — namely, a few prayers, credos, litanies, and gospels published by the press between 1820 and 1823 —, the author tries to show it by pointing at the use of religious language and formulas in political propaganda and by concluding that very same propaganda played an eminent role in a double process: the evolution towards laicization and the sacralization of the liberal revolution itself.eng
