Vidros de S. Cucufate

Abstract

A escavação da villa romana de São Cucufate (Vidigueira) deu- -nos um total de 330 fragmentos de vidro, dos quais apenas 194 puderam ser classificados quanto ao tipo e forma, e mais 22 quanto ao tipo genérico. A sua cronologia vai desde o séc. I até aos meados do séc. V, correspondendo às três fases de construção e ocupação desta villa rural com a sua extensa pars rustica. Toda esta construção e subsequente demolição causou um tal revolvimento do terreno que temos apenas 96 fragmentos de vidro provenientes de estratos não remexidos. Este conjunto não pode, por isso, trazer um significativo contributo para a cronologia do vidro romano em geral. Tendo em vista esta falta de estratigrafía, decidimos dividir o material em grupos globais, com base não só na forma como também na cor e na qualidade, numa tentativa de chegar a uma separação cronológica indicativa. Publicamos a colecção quase integralmente para dar ao leitor uma ideia das peças de vidro usadas numa villa rural durante os primeiros quatro ou cinco séculos da nossa era.

The excavation of the Roman villa of São Cucufate (Vidigueira, Potugal) gave us a total of 330 glass fragments, 194 of with could be classified regarding type and form, and a further 22 only as to generic typic. Their chronology goes from the first century A.D. to the middle of the fifth century, corresponding to the three stages of occupation of this large rural villa and its extensive pars rustica. «Villa I» dates from around the middle of the first centuiy A.D.; this was destroyed and another, «villa II», reconstructed at the same site between ca. 130 and 150 A.D.. The latter continued in use until ca. 360 A.D., when it once again was razed and a much larger «villa III» constructed. These destructions and their subsequent rebuilding caused a thorough upheaval of the terrain; only 96 glass fragments were found in securely dated strata. Therefore, very little, if anything, may be learned about the chronology of Roman glass from this site. Because of this lack of stratigraphy, the material was divided into broad categories based, not only on form, but also on colour and quality, in an attempt to arrive at a meaningful chronological separation. It was furthemore decided to publish the material in its entirety in order to give an overview of the glass used at such a provincial, relatively poor, villa during the first four to five centuries A.D..
