Livros e leituras para instrução económica do povo: (1746-1820)

Abstract

Com este trabalho, pretendemos fazer uma sistematização de alguns dos textos portugueses, redigidos entre 1746-1820, com o objectivo de instruir o povo nas actividades económicas, particularmente na nova agricultura e indústria popular. Partindo das ideias dos ilustrados portugueses, Luís António Vemey e Ribeiro Sanches, sobre a importância da literacia popular, analisamos algumas das obras redigidas expressamente para instrução económica do povo. Entre essas obras, salientam-se os catecismos de agricultura e as instruções para a cultura da seda e do linho. Questionamos, também, o papel da Academia das Ciências de Lisboa neste domínio, particularmente o seu insuficiente apoio aos autores de textos dirigidos à instrução popular.

In this work we aim at systematising the Portuguese texts written between 1746 to 1820 with the objective of popular economic instruction specially at new agriculture and popular industry. Taking as reference the ideas of the Portuguese Enlightenment - specially those of Luís António Verney and Ribeiro Sanches - about the importance of popular literacy, we make an analysis of the texts written expressly to popular instruction: the catechisms of agriculture and the instructions for the silk and linen industries. We also debate the task of the Academy of Sciences in this area, namely the insufficiently support in patronising authors to publish their books of popular instruction.
