Empresas e empresários: que lugar na história económica e social?

Abstract

A história económica e social tem passado por vicissitudes diversas, cuja análise nos ajuda a compreender a posição que hoje ocupa. Após a sua afirmação progressiva, nas primeiras décadas de Oitocentos, adquiriu um papel quase hegemónico - anos 1930-1960 -, tendo registado em seguida uma certa crise. Para a superação desta, os contributos da história empresarial revelam-se significativos, contemplando organizações e seus agentes, tecnologias, gestão, produtos e mercado. Além de uma nova luz sobre a história das “células da actividade económica”, isto é, das próprias empresas, possibilita igualmente uma certa humanização da pesquisa histórica, com o estudo dos recursos humanos com elas relacionados.

Economic and Social History has undergone several ups and downs, whose analysis helps us to understand its standing nowadays. After a period of increasing assertion in the first decades of the 19th century, it became hegemonic - between the 1930’s and the 1960’s - having undergone a kind of crisis afterwards. In order to overcome this crisis, the contributions of the history of enterprises are significant, given that they deal with organizations and their agents, technologies, management, products and market. Besides this new light they throw upon these “cells of economic activity”, i. e. the enterprises themselves, they also make possible a certain humanization of historical research through the study of human resources connected with them.
