Provedores e escrivães da Misericordia de Coimbra de 1700 a 1910: elites e fontes de poder

Abstract

A identificação dos dirigentes da Misericordia de Coimbra nos séculos XVIII e XIX revela quem são os poderosos da cidade, que instmmentos e estratégias utilizam, que tipo de poder exercem, como se produzem e reproduzem; reflecte a inelutável lei da caducidade e circulação das elites, os grupos de interesse que se movimentam, mas não o pulsar da vida económica, cujos agentes nunca foram admitidos no topo hierárquico da instituição. Este era ocupado por quem se notabilizou pelo domínio de outras fontes de poder: família, competência, exercício de cargos da administração central e local, pertença às ordens militares, à Inquisição, ao Cabido, à Universidade, ou ainda à maçonaria, aos partidos políticos ou aos movimentos católicos organizados.

The identification of those who ruled the Misericórdia of Coimbra in the 18th and 19th centuries shows us who were the powerful in the town, which tools and strategies they employed, what kind of power they exerted, how appeared and reproduced themselves; it also displays the unavoidable law of decay and circulation of the ‘elites’, and the lobbies in action; on the contrary, it does not unveil the real strength of economic life, since their agents have never been admitted to the top positions of this institution. Those positions were grabbed by those who became notorious by the possession of other sources of power - lineage, ability, places in central or local administration - or belonged to the Military Orders, the Inquisition, the Cathedral Chapter, the University, as well as to the Freemasonry, the political parties or organized catholic movements.
