Astronomia e observatórios: Real Observatorio da Tapada da Ajuda: (1861-1910)

Abstract

O Real Observatório Astronómico da Ajuda (1861-1910) permite ver as mutações das imagens da Ciência na nossa sociedade. A colina da Ajuda, espaço de memória científica de Museu de História Natural no âmbito das Luzes, adquire no âmbito do Progresso e da Popularização da Ciência novos percursos científicos: a Astronomia e a Agronomia. Neste artigo reflecte-se sobre a historia da ideia do Observatorio Astronómico Real e do papel desempenhado pelos membros da comunidade científica portuguesa, inseridos numa rede científica internacional. A existência de sessões públicas de astronomia mostra uma instituição científica voltada para um público entendimento da ciência (PUC).

The Royal Astronomical Observatory of Lisbon - Tapada da Ajuda - gives us an insight on the change of Science representations in our society. The hill of Ajuda, a place of scientific memory due to the Natural History Museum, founded there in the period of the Enlightenment, acquires new scientific values in the fields of Progress and Popularization of Science: Astronomy and Agronomy. In this article some thought is given to the history of the idea of the Royal Astronomical Observatory and to the role played by the members of the scientific Portuguese community as part of a scientific international network. The organization of astronomical meetings for large audiences reveals a scientific institution devoted to the «Public Understanding of Science» (PUS)
