Medidas portuguesas de capacidade: origem e difusão dos principais alqueires usados até ao século XIX

Abstract

O esforço centralizador e uniformizador de sucessivos monarcas ao longo de séculos permitiu ir reduzindo a diversidade metrológica existente nos primeiros tempos da monarquia portuguesa. No século XIX, o valor do alqueire, unidade de capacidade para secos, restringia- -se ao intervalo entre 13 e 20 litros, subsistindo um pequeno número de padrões alternativos. O presente artigo identifica os principais padrões do alqueire usados em Portugal no fim do antigo regime e estuda as origens desses padrões e a difusão que tinham nas diferentes regiões do país.

The centralizing and uniformizing efforts of many kings throughout the centuries allowed to gradually reduce the metrological diversity observed in Portugal until de 14th century. In the 19th century, the value of the alqueire, unit of mesure for capacity (dry materials), was restricted to the interval between 13 a 20 liters and to a small number of alternative standards. This paper identifies the main standards of the alqueire still used in Portugal when the decimal system was introduced and studies the origins of these standards as well as their dissemination in different areas of the country.
