A política matrimonial da dinastía de Avis: Leonor e Frederico III da Alemanha

Abstract

A política internacional de alianças matrimoniais da dinastia de Avis é aqui estudada a partir da “história de caso” da união de Leonor, filha do rei D. Duarte de Portugal, com o imperador Frederico III da Alemanha, estirpe fundadora da linhagem dos Habsburgo. Acompanham-se neste estudo as negociações e intervenientes que viabilizaram este contrato, pormenorizando, em especial, a viagem dos representantes do imperador, que chegaram a Portugal, em Julho de 1451, relatada por Lanckman. O casamento, por palavras de presente, realiza-se em Agosto desse ano, em Lisboa, e sucedem-se ricas festividades no mês de Outubro. D. Leonor acaba por partir para Itália, ao encontro do Imperador, nos inícios de Novembro. Segue-se a sua viagem por mar até ao porto de Livomo. Para em Fevereiro de 1452 se vir a dar o primeiro encontro dos esposados em Siena, pintado por Pintorrichio e testemunhado e descrito pelo bispo de Siena Eneas Sílvio Piccolomini. Conhece-se o casamento de bênção e cerimónias de sagração e coroação, ocorridas em Roma, em Março de 1452, pontificadas por Nicolau V, e depois as festividades que ao casal imperial ofereceu o tio de Leonor, Afonso o Magnânimo, no reino de Nápoles, acontecimentos vários que conhecemos pelos relatos de Lanckman e pelas cartas que o acompanhante da infanta, Lopo de Almeida, envia a D. Afonso V rei de Portugal. A esta ambiência de festa sucede-se a viagem da imperatriz até Neustadt, e, por fim, em breves páginas, narram-se as principais efemérides da sua vida, com realce para o nascimento dos seus filhos. Traça-se, enfim, uma sinopse da vida de encanto e desencanto de uma infanta portuguesa, que é a directa antepassada do grande imperador Carlos V, aquele que se virá também a consorciar com uma princesa portuguesa, Isabel, filha de D. Manuel.

The case study of the marriage of Leonor (daughter of D. Duarte, king of Portugal) with the emperor Frederic III of Germany (the founding source of the Habsburg lineage) illustrates the international policy of matrimonial alliances pursued by the dynasty of Avis. We keep trace of the negotiations and of the negotiators who made this contract feasible and, in particular, of the journey of the emperor’s delegates (who arrived in Portugal in July of 1451 ) as narrated by Lanckman. The wedding ceremony, in which the actual vows were pronounced, took place in August of the same year, in Lisbon, followed by sumptuous festivities in October. Leonor left to Italy in the beginning of November, to meet the emperor. After her voyage, by sea, to Livomo, the spouses finally had their first encounter, in Siena, a scene depicted by Pintorricchio, witnessed and described by the bishop of Siena Eneas Silvio Piccolomini. We know about the wedding blessings and the ceremonies of consecration and coronation, performed in Rome by Pope Nicholas V, in March of 1452, as well as the festivities that followed, offered to the imperial couple, in the kingdom of Naples, by the uncle of Leonor, Alphonse, the Magnanimous. All these events came to our notice through Lanckman’s reports and the letters that Lopo de Almeida (the Infanta’s attendant) wrote to D. Afonso V, king of Portugal. After this time of joy, the empress made her journey to Neustadt. Finally, in a few pages, this essay tells us about the most important moments of her life, with emphasis to the birth of her children, and summarizes the biography - in which charm and chagrin were intertwined - of this Portuguese Infanta, a direct ancestor of the great emperor Charles V, the one who will join in marriage another Portuguese princess, Isabel, the daughter of the D. Manuel.
