A inserção urbana das catedrais medievais portuguesas: o caso da catedral de Lamego

Abstract

Este artigo pretende apresentar o ponto da situação no tocante à inserção urbana das catedrais medievais portuguesas e matizar o conhecimento que hoje temos sobre esta matéria através do exemplo da Sé de Lamego, analisando a forma como a sua presença no tecido urbano condicionou a organização dos espaços e a morfologia citadina no seu todo, quer quanto ao espaço construído, quer ao domínio do mercado da propriedade. Nesse sentido, procura-se reconstruir a morfologia da cidade, identificando as edificações episcopais e capitulares, as casas de residência da clerezia, a sua localização, o seu interior e a sociabilidade do espaço doméstico, aspectos que entre nós ainda se mantêm pouco conhecidos.

This essay aims at clarifying the situation concerning the urban insertion of the Portuguese medieval cathedrals, and to enrich the knowledge that we have today on this matter, through the example of the Sé of Lamego. I will analyze the way this monument’s presence in the urban area conditioned the organization of space and the urban morphology on the hole, when it comes to the built space and to the market property. In that sense, I aim at reconstituting the morphology of the city, identifying the Episcopal and capitulary constructions, the residences of the clergy, their location, their interior and the sociability of the domestic space - aspects that we still know little about.
