Mulheres e homens ao serviço da Casa de D. Catarina de Áustria: estatuto, prestigio e poder: (1525-1578)

Abstract

O objectivo central deste trabalho é dar a conhecer, em primeiro lugar, a composição do séquito de D. Catarina de Áustria, em especial, no que diz respeito à permanência de vários desses elementos ou de seus descendentes ao serviço da rainha entre 1525 e 1578. Deste ponto de vista, propomo-nos no texto que se segue privilegiar o estudo de um dos principais sectores da Casa da Rainha, a Câmara, onde a «família» feminina e masculina da consorte régia desempenhava funções múltiplas, mas propiciatórias ao reforço de alianças matrimoniais, à constituição de grupos com forte influência política e social e ao exercício da protecção e do «favor» régio. Mulheres e homens que ao serviço da Casa de D. Catarina de Áustria souberam consolidar o estatuto, o prestígio e o poder.

The purpose of this paper is firstly to recover the composition of the retinue of Catherine of Austria, highlighting the importance of those who came with her and also their descendants, who remained at her service between 1525 and 1578. Following this line, we will study one of the most important departments of her household, the Chamber, where the male and female «family» exercised various roles and functions, and which provided strategic marriage alliances and a notorious protection from the Queen, emphasizing their strong political and social action. There were women and men who served the Queen and in that way reinforced their status, honour and power.
