dc.description.abstract | A elite macaense, no séc.
dc.description.abstract | The Macanese elite had an autonomous attitude that led it to look for solutions to urgent problems. This is one of the apparent characteristics of the models of Portuguese mercantilist/colonialist occupation during the period of maritime expansion. Far away from the centres of Portuguese political power, this community had been engaging in stimulating trade with Japan and China, albeit for only a few decades, and had been subjected to an increasingly suffocating pressure from the local authorities in China. The survival of the Portuguese port was thanks to the diplomatic measures (official or private) that the elite constantly took. | eng |
