As elites de Eiras nos finais do século XVIII: percursos e estratégias de afirmação social

Abstract

Este artigo pretende identificar os traços fundamentais da estrutura social de uma pequena comunidade da região de Coimbra nos finais do século XVIII. Para além de detectar os principais níveis de organização social local, a autora procura, através da análise de quatro famílias da vila de Eiras, clarificar percursos, conhecer formas de consolidação de lugares de poder na comunidade e apropriação de recursos capazes de gerar riqueza e prestígio. Procura-se, igualmente, sublinhar tendências de comportamento ao nível das estratégias matrimoniais, da constituição e transmissão de património e da circulação geracional de cargos no seio dessa elite local.

This article aims at identifying the fundamental features of the social structure of a small community - Eiras - in the area of Coimbra in the last years of the 18th century. Besides pointing out the main different levels of social organization, a special attention is paid to a group of four families, trying to clarify their life trajectories, and to trace forms of the consolidation of power positions within the community and of the appropriation of resources leading to the acquisition of wealth and prestige. Some trends of behaviour will be underlined as well, such as marriage strategies, the constitution and transfer of the family estate, and circulation of ruling positions between successive generations within the local elite.
