Reclusão e controle dos pobres: o lado desconhecido da assistência em Portugal

Abstract

O presente texto tem dois objecti vos principais: alargar o campo da investigação da história da assistência em Portugal, na Idade Moderna, apresentando um tipo de instituições que supostamente não teriam existido no nosso país - as Casas de recolhimento de mendigos, onde os pobres eram acolhidos a troco de trabalho - e revelar o percurso português de um dos principais mentores destas casas: Miguel de Giginta, autor do Tratado de remedio de pobres.

This text has two main objectives: to enlarge the research field of the poor relief and health care in the Early Modem Period in Portugal, presenting a type of assistance institutions that supposedly did not exist in our country - the beggar hospitals, where the poor were sheltered in exchange for work, the Recolhimento da Piedade, in Évora - and revealing the work done in Portugal by one of the main mentors of these institutions: Miguel de Giginta, author of the Tratado de remedio de pobres.
