Venturas e desventuras de João Fernandes, livreiro de Lisboa,em meados de Quinhentos

Abstract

Many were the New Christians that left Lisbon, the capital of the reign in which the imposing Rua Nova dos Mercadores, by virtue of its magnificence, refinement and lavishness, instilled respect and admiration throughout the whole of Europe in the 16th century. Under its wide arcades had settled the most eminent booksellers whom men of letters eagerly resorted to in demand for fresh publications. Based on Portuguese and Italian documentation we will investigate the daily routine of João Fernandes, a prominent bookseller and book merchant, in business since the twenties, to whose patronage we owe one of the editions of the most famous 16th century Portuguese treatise on arithmetic. We will follow the troublesome route of this New Christian bookseller who fled from Lisbon headed for Antwerp and Ferrara, after having been arrested and convicted for Judaism in the Lisbon Court of the Holy Office, in 1543.

Muitos foram os cristãos‑novos que abandonaram a cidade de Lisboa, cuja imponente Rua Nova dos Mercadores, pela sua magnificência, requinte e ostentação, impunha o respeito e a admiração de toda a Europa de Quinhentos. Debaixo das suas amplas arcadas, albergavam‑se as tendas dos maiores livreiros da capital, à porta das quais os mais letrados compulsavam, avidamente, as novidades editoriais. A partir de documentação portuguesa e italiana, perscrutar‑se‑á o quotidiano de João Fernandes, um proeminente livreiro e mercador de livros, em atividade desde a década de vinte, a quem se ficou a dever o patrocínio de uma das edições do mais famoso tratado português de aritmética de Quinhentos. Procurar‑se‑á traçar o percurso atribulado deste livreiro cristão‑novo, fugido de Lisboa rumo a Antuérpia e a Ferrara, depois de ter sido processado por judaísmo e preso, por ordem do Tribunal do Santo Ofício de Lisboa, em 1543.
