Cem anos de livros para crianças em Portugal: olhares sobre o mar na literatura infantil

Abstract

This study aims to characterise the evolution of the Portuguese children’s literature in the last 100 years, using as a criterion for the selection of a coherent corpus the representations of the sea. The sea is a recurring topic in children’s literature through time, and the variation in the representation of the sea illustrates the evolution of children’s books. From a symbolic element with strong connotation with national identity, the sea became also a privileged space of leisure, and concern, regarding the ecological point of view. Thus, in the last years, the educational and formative dimension of Portuguese children’s literature, very present in the beginning of the XXth century, has been losing importance in favour of the aesthetic and playful aspects of children’s books, namely those concerned with illustration and graphic design.

Pretende‑se, neste estudo, proceder a uma caracterização da evolução do livro infantil português nos últimos 100 anos, tomando como critério para a seleção de um corpus coeso as representações do mar. De elemento de forte conotação simbólica e ressonância identitária, a espaço privilegiado de lazer, sem esquecer a dimensão ecológica, o mar constituiu um topos recorrente na literatura infantil (LI) ao longo do tempo e a variação nas suas representações ilustra a evolução das tendências desta literatura, onde a dimensão mais formativa e educativa foi perdendo peso em favor das vertentes estética e lúdica.
