Livro científico nas coleções da BPMP: ciências exatas, séculos XVI e XVII

Abstract

The aim of this work is mainly to contribute for information on some scientific books in the field of exact sciences (mathematics, astronomy and other disciplines that use quantitative fundamentals to explain reality or value technical‑‑practical knowledge and ingenuity), printed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and currently belonging to the heritage collections of the Municipal Library of Porto. The approach focuses on a listing and a reflection about a set of relevant printed sources for the history of science in Portugal and Europe, giving emphasis to some representative early modern and rare scientific books. In some of these printed books identifying marks and previous owners are also mentioned, as well as demonstrations of literary censorship.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo principal contribuir para a divulgação do livro científico no âmbito das ciências exatas (com realce para a matemática, astronomia e demais disciplinas que utilizam fundamentos quantitativos para explicar a realidade ou que incidem na valoração do conhecimento ou do engenho técnico‑prático), impresso em prelos quinhentistas e seiscentistas e atualmente preservado nas coleções patrimoniais da Biblioteca Pública Municipal do Porto. A abordagem apresentada privilegia a enumeração e a reflexão de conjunto sobre um núcleo de fontes impressas relevantes para a história da ciência em Portugal e na Europa enfatizando alguns cimélios emblemáticos. Referem‑‑se ainda marcas de posse e antigos possuidores, bem como manifestações de censura literária em alguns destes impressos.
