A Liberdade de Imprensa nas Cortes Vintistas: Discursos e Representações dos Deputados Eclesiásticos

Abstract

O presente artigo propõe-se a refletir a presença político-ideológica dos deputados eclesiásticos nas Cortes portuguesas de 1821-1823 no que à temática da liberdade de imprensa diz respeito. Procurar-se-á, assim, por meio de uma estreita observância dos seus discursos parlamentares, demonstrar de que forma o seu contributo foi importante para a regulamentação jurídica da liberdade de Imprensa em Portugal, bem como descortinar que representação tiveram num dos debates mais longos e controversos (cujos variados pontos sobre a matéria em análise, como seja os da defesa ou condenação da Censura prévia ou os do modo como julgar os possíveis abusos movidos contra o Estado ou contra a religião, motivaram, aliás, a demarcação clara de posições antagónicas) que a Assembleia Constituinte conheceu.

The present article proposes to reflect the political-ideological presence of the ecclesiastical deputies in the Portuguese Courts of 1821-1823 in which the subject of freedom of the press concerns. It will be sought, therefore, by a close observance of their parliamentary speeches, to demonstrate how their contribution was important to the legal regulation of freedom of the Press in Portugal, as well as to discover what representation they had in one of the longest debates and controversial issues (whose various points on the subject in question, such as the defense or condemnation of the previous Censorship or how to judge possible abuses against the State or against religion, motivated the clear demarcation of antagonistic positions) which the Constituent Assembly met.
