Liberalismo e Democracia no Portugal Oitocentista, em Perspetiva Comparada (1832-1895)

Abstract

O artigo aborda a evolução política em Portugal, comparando-a com as dos países europeus próximos, no período 1832-1895. Distingue uma fase de reformas liberais, em rutura com o Antigo Regime, em prol da liberdade, seguida de outra fase de reformas democráticas, a partir da década de 1870, em prol de maior igualdade entre os cidadãos. Portugal evoluiu a par da média dos países comparados, chegando a um nível relativamente avançado de soluções políticas, tais como o direito de voto e a liberdade de imprensa, que contrasta com o atraso de certos indicadores sociais, como o analfabetismo. Esta evolução reflete o ascendente político da classe média, em especial de funcionários do Estado.

The article discusses the political evolution in Portugal, comparing it with those of closer European countries, in the period 1832-1895. It distinguishes a phase of liberal reforms, breaking with the Old Regime, in favor of freedom, followed by another phase of democratic reforms, starting in the 1870s, for greater equality among citizens. Portugal has evolved along with the average of compared countries, reaching a relatively advanced level of political solutions, such as voting rights and freedom of the press, which contrasts with the backwardness of certain social indicators, such as illiteracy. This evolution reflects the political ascendancy of the middle class, especially of state officials.
