Focusing on the rich evidence, in Greek and Roman authors, about the succession of the Asiatic empires and of the Greek hegemonies, this essay offers some observations about the evolution of this historical and historiographical paradigm in Hellenistic and Roman times. A special attention is devoted to the place assigned to the Macedonian and to the Roman empires, as far as they were considered, on a case-by-case basis, the most crucial link between the different chains. The paper aims at evaluating how historians dealt with the theme and how the translatio imperii was exploited to serve also an ideological purpose.eng
